The World of Child’s Mind

Before embarking on my art project, I pondered the question,

"What connects my favorites and interests?"

A mind map led me to keywords such as 'childlike wonder', 'friendship', 'fantasy', and 'fairy tale narratives'. From this, I deduced that these elements converge into a singular realm represented by 'Child’s Mind'. This realization became the cornerstone of my art project.

Initially, the abstract nature of 'Child’s Mind' posed a challenge in capturing its essence. To overcome this, I endeavored to translate the emotions and feelings evoked by this concept into my artistic expressions.

FINAL WORK

Child’s Mind

I found myself asking, "Why do some people yearn to return to a child's mind?" and "What does 'Child’s Mind' mean to them?"

Perhaps those content with their lives seldom feel this longing. But for those who do wish to revert to a child's mindset, it may stem from current dissatisfaction. Why do they seek refuge in the innocence of childhood? I believe it's the stark 'contrast' between the carefree nature of childhood, free from pressure, and the present, often laden with various forms of constraint.

What is your The Child’s Mind?

What do people mean by 'a child's mind'? In 2015, I participated in an annual exhibition organized by Spot Color where I was given a task to explore the concept of 'a child's mind'. Many people participated in this exhibition, and I categorized the different ways in which people perceive a child's mind, both in the past and present.

The Child’s Mind- Refuge

I often wondered,

"Why do people desire a child's mind?"

To me, a child's mind offers an escape from the oppressive present—it is a 'Refuge'.
My sanctuaries, aside from the childlike innocence, include places and states like a bathroom, a bus ride, the comfort of bed linens, the escape into sleep, the world within a book, and the presence of my mother. These havens share a commonality with a child's mind—they all represent a form of refuge to me. Therefore, I thought it fitting to depict the concept of a child's mind through these elements.

FINAL WORK

Self-portrait, Cover on my face, Refuge on my face, Refuge on my body

I contemplated the design of my logo as if it were a doorplate, symbolizing a milestone that marks my personal space and sanctuary. The space adorned with this logo thus becomes a refuge for me. Envisioning a fabric that creates a secluded area by draping over the face, the logo emblazoned on this fabric speaks of the refuge it offers.

FINAL WORK

Refuge of Right

I perceived a shared essence between my mother and the Virgin Mary. This parallel led me to see my mother in the light of the Virgin Mary. The irreplaceable presence of my mother brings comfort and ease, akin to the sanctuary found in a child's mind. Consequently, my artwork, portraying me cradled in the Virgin Mary's arms amidst a halo of sacred light, became a haven, embodying that same sense of refuge.
